Research constitutes the keystone of academic activities in the Department. All other activities in the Department be it teaching, workshops, outreach programmes or even fun activities are tethered to research work. Research activities focus on the languages of India, especially the understudied languages.
Students of the MA programme work on their mother tongues as well as write dissertations on a relatively lesser-known language. The PhD programme continues this focus on the linguistic diversity of India. PhD students are encouraged to work on research problems related to their mother tongues and publish their findings extensively.
Faculty research focuses on areas such as Syntax, Pragmatics, and Multilingualism, especially multilingual education. Faculties often teach special courses on linguistic aspects and issues which need urgent academic attention and thereby define the research programme of the Department.
The organization of intensive workshops serve as a cornerstone of both research and teaching activities in the Department. These workshops are influential in syllabus revision as well as in articulating newer areas of research.
