Admission to the PhD in Linguistics
The applications for PhD programme in Linguistics are accepted through the University’s PhD portal- https://uomphd.mu.ac.in/. The link for accepting the applications opens after the declaration of MU-PET results.
Eligibility: Candidates seeking admission to the PhD in Linguistics programme in our Department must fulfill the following criteria-
- MA in Linguistics or in any discipline (preferably with some courses in Linguistics taken in graduation) with at least 55% score or equivalent grade AND
- UGC-NET in Linguistics (or allied discipline) OR
- MU-PET in Linguistics cleared as per the University norms
The MU-PET examination is conducted by the University of Mumbai twice a year, the information of which may be sought from www.mu.ac.in
The candidates selected through the UGC-NET or MU-PET examination are asked to make a presentation on the proposed research topic before the Admissions Committee of the Department. The candidates recommended by the Admissions Committee can take admission to the Programme by paying the required Fees.

Necessary documents to be uploaded on the PhD admissions portal:
- Marksheets of Masters degree (all semesters)
- Passing certificate and Degree Certificate (if already issued) for the Masters degree.
- Marksheets of Bachelors degree (all semesters)
- Passing certificate and Degree certificate for the Bachelors degree
- Marksheets and passing certificates of HSC and SSC
- Marksheet/passing certificate of MU-PET or UGC-NET
- Photo-ID and residential address proof (Adhaar card / Driving license / Voter ID)
- For students from the Universities outside of Maharashtra: Migration Certificate (if already issued)
- For candidates applying through a reserved category quota: Caste certificate, Non-creamy layer certificate
- Proof of name-change (if applicable) (marriage certificate, notarized affidavit, gazette copy etc).
As per the UGC norms, the intake capacity of the Department for the PhD programme is 08, out of which 06 seats are currently filled.
Admission to the MA in Linguistics programme
Eligibility: Graduates of any discipline with good academic record can apply for the admission to the MA in Linguistics programme of our Department. Typically, we get students with BA/MA in Indian and foreign languages such as Marathi, Sanskrit, English; BA/MA in sociology, psychology, mass media and journalism, economics; BSc/MSc in mathematics, physics, statistics, computer science; BTech; BComm etc.
In addition, every candidate has to clear a written Entrance Test (with minimum 40% score) set by the Department. The Entrance Test is designed to test a candidate’s analytic ability, pattern recognition skills and reasoning capacity as well as her/his awareness of the linguistic scenario in India.

You may take a look at a sample paper of the Entrance Test. Please note that this is only a sample paper, which would give you an idea of the types of questions you may come across. The format of the test has changed since the last two years: the test is held in online mode and will consist of 25 Multiple Choice Questions of 50 marks and 5 descriptive, subjective answer questions for 50 marks.
One can prepare themselves for the Entrance Test by familiarizing themselves with any introductory textbook on Linguistics. The one we observed that people enjoy reading and find useful is “An Introduction to Language” by Victoria Fromkin et al. There are many others available too. One should also be aware of the peculiar multilingual setting of India. The Entrance Test is usually scheduled in the 4th week of June or the 1st week of July every year.
The intake capacity of the MA programme is 75. The reservation policy as per the Government rules is applicable for the admissions.

The admissions for the MA programme typically open in early May every year. The steps in the admission process are as follows:
- Apply and register for the Entrance Test through the MA Linguistics Admission application on the University’s admission portal.
- Ensure that you have submitted all the necessary documents. Do not upload a photograph of the documents. Please ONLY upload a good and clear SCANNED copy.
- Appear for the Entrance Test scheduled by the Department and clear the same. The results of the Test are declared within a week from the commencement of the Test.
- After the scrutiny of the documents, a provisional merit list of candidates based on their Entrance Test score is uploaded on the same portal.
- After clearing any grievances of the students, if any, a final merit list will be uploaded on the portal and the link for the payment of fees will be shared with the candidates.
- The candidates must confirm their admission by paying the required fees within a stipulated time.
(The students from the Universities outside of Maharashtra will be Provisionally Admitted, pending completion of their Eligibility and Verification process from the University. )

Admission to the Certificate Course in Phonetics and Phonology (Part-time, Online)
Eligibility : HSC
Admissions to the Online Certificate Course in Phonetics and Phonology typically start in mid-May, immediately after the HSC results are declared. The admissions are processed through the portal of the University- https://parttimecourses.mu.ac.in/ The candidates are required to apply on the Portal by uploading the required documents.
Once the Department finishes the scrutiny of the documents and approves the application, the candidate will be sent a link to pay the fees. The selected candidates can confirm their admission by paying the fees within a week of receiving the payment link, failing which the candidate loses the admission spot.
The admissions are carried out on first-come-first-served basis. The intake capacity of 50.
The required documents are:
- HSC marksheet and passing certificate
- Photo ID (Adhaar/ Voter ID / Driving license)
- Proof of name-change (if applicable)
The Fees of the Course are as follows:
Tuition fee for the entire course: Rs 2000/- (for Indian nationals); Rs. 10,000/- (for foreign nationals).
Examination fees : Rs 360/- (to be paid at the time of filling the Examination Form).
